Registering with a Doctor

Your local doctor whilst at University

Most students coming to Birmingham for the first time will need to register with a local doctor (sometimes called a GP, which is short for General Practitioner) for their medical care. This should be done within the first 2 weeks of arrival. The easiest way to find information on GP's close to the University is to visit www.nhs.uk

Once on the NHS website, click the "Doctors" link on the left hand side of the screen, and then "Nearest Search". You can then insert your FULL Birmingham term time address post code to find a local health centre to choose from (for example B15 6SZ). You will be able to get basic information on all the local Practices and visit their websites where available. Some Practices will even allow you to pre-register with them before coming to Birmingham. You can also search for dentists and optometrists on the same site.

UK students should make every effort to find out their NHS number. This can be found on your medical card or by contacting your GP. Knowing your NHS number makes it easier for you to access health services and speeds up the transfer of your records.
